Family Mental Health Cafés
The Family Mental Health Cafés are a series of five community conversations we hosted in Ontario in 2018 & 2019. These gatherings were designed to create a conversation where all family members – those who were diagnosed, parents, siblings, partners, friends – could share their views on roles, relationships, and caring when mental illness is part of family life. Cafés were hosted in Toronto, Kenora, Ottawa, London and Brampton, in association with local Canadian Mental Health Association branches.
We filmed key highlights of these Cafés and invited participants to share their views in interviews.
The Family Mental Health Café format is based on the World Café Method, an internationally recognized method for bringing people together who care about an issue to share knowledge and wisdom that could lead to solutions to their challenges. The method relies on creating “Questions that Matter” to generate a series of conversations about a topic. Conversations are designed to make sure everyone can contribute, and people can discover similarities, differences, and new ideas that can lead to new solutions. The conversations happen in small groups sharing a table and then insights and discoveries are shared and discussed with everyone at the gathering.
